The prompt at Illustration Friday is "muddy". (See one of my favourite interpretations here)
Thich Naht Hahn has four words "No mud - No lotus" for his teaching on suffering. Thay explains:“It’s like growing lotus flowers. You cannot grow lotus flowers on marble. You have to grow them on the mud. Without mud, you cannot have a lotus flower. Without suffering, you have no ways in order to learn how to be understanding and compassionate.... Happiness is the lotus flower, and the suffering is the mud. So the practice is how to make use of the suffering, make use of the mud, to create the flower, the happiness, and this is something possible."
"For someone who has wisdom, insight, when she looks into the heap of garbage, she can already see the flowers in the garbage. If the flower is on her way to the garbage, the garbage also may be on her way back to the flower. "

very. very well done - Ithink the picture is beautiful and extremely well crafted but I have more appreciation for what you wrote - too true
ReplyDeleteYour blog is fantastic and so is your artwork! I'm so thrilled you left a nice comment on mind that led me to yours. Wow! I read so many things I needed to hear tonight on your pages. What medium did you use on this piece? Is it a journal page or a full painting? It's truly exquisite and thoughts behind it are so right.
ReplyDeleteWhat a good reminder, both visually and in words! It seems so easy to turn our nose up at the garbage. I need to be constantly reminded that the suffering is indeed compost for the beautiful flowers. I don't think I can be reminded often enough!
ReplyDeleteI keep thinking I will paint a lotus but never seem to get there. You have inspired me with your beautiful serene piece!
you are my inspiration
ReplyDeletelove meagan xoxox
What a great quote! I've never heard it before, but it rings so true. And a beautiful drawing to boot! Nice job.
ReplyDeletegreat color
ReplyDeleteThis is gorgeous and I like the meaning... I need that reminder every now and then.
ReplyDeleteBeautifully imagery to go with timeless words!
ReplyDeleteToday I also posted the words that Thich Naht Hahn made more visible to the world. Which is how I ended up in your lovely home on the Web :) ...you're work is beautiful and I thought you might enjoy
